NAPEO 2012 Legal & Legislative Conference

National Association of Professional Employer Organizations Conference

As a member of NAPEO (National Association of Professional Employer Organizations), HR Strategies had the opportunity to have Jim Beesley, CEO; Georgiana Britt, VP of Operations; and MariaElena Ayala, VP of HR/Client Services, attend the 2012 Legal & Legislative Conference. During the two day conference, more than 25 PEO legal experts were on hand to discuss, give practical advice, and insider insight (through in-depth sessions) on the latest HR and compliance issues, laws and regulations.

Educational sessions

Educational sessions at the conference included a variety of topics, allowing attendees to bring back vast new information to enhance their strategic HR operations. Topics included in the conference covered Privacy Requirements (limiting access, reporting theft, and protection of privacy), Healthcare (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and what lies ahead), Harassment, Social Media Issues, Leave Issues (ADAAA, FMLA, Workers Comp, USERRA), Judicial and Regulatory Updates, National Labor Relations Board (Quickie Elections, Social Media Limitations, Employer Posting Requirements), Insurance Issues, and Ethics.

Opportunities

Attendance at the conference also afforded HR Strategies, Jim Beesley, CEO; the opportunity to discuss The Small Business Efficiency Act, with U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson’s legislative assistant. “I was pleased to learn that the Senator has agreed to support the bill,” said Jim. According to the NAPEO website, this legislation will grant legal status to PEOs to collect and remit federal payroll taxes; improve small business compliance with federal payroll tax law; create a voluntary certification process within the IRS for PEOs and a safe harbor for small businesses that use certified PEOs; and provide needed certainty for small business, allowing that sector to better focus on growth and job creation. HR Strategies continued membership in NAPEO, along with their attendance at the 2012 Legal & Legislative conference, is just one way that they continue to be able to gain information and knowledge to stay at the forefront of the PEO and HR industry, and supply their clients with top-notch services.
