The Georgia DOL was originally established in 1911 as the Department of Commerce and Labor; however, when the Georgia General Assembly enacted the Employment Security Law of 1937, the official Georgia Department of Labor was created. The GDOL is led by the State Labor Commissioner, Mark Butler. According to the Georgia Department of Labor website; with 2,000+ under his leadership, Mark Butler has the responsibility of carrying out the main mission “to work with public and private partners in building a workforce system that contributes to Georgia’s economic prosperity”.
The divisions and offices of Employment Services, Unemployment Insurance, Workforce Statistics & Economic Research, along with many others under the GDOL are responsible for creating opportunities and providing services that assist individuals to attain their work goals, along with increasing their self-sufficiency through employment and training. Additionally, they assist employers through employee recruitment and selection services, workforce information, and technical support. Furthermore, the Georgia Department of Labor governs the state’s unemployment insurance program, reports labor market information, and administers laws relating to child labor.
