Black Ice Threat for Tonight’s Commute

ATLANTA, Ga. – Metro Atlanta roads are wet with melted ice this afternoon, and that could mean real trouble for the evening commute. FOX 5 chief meteorologist Ken Cook says when the sun goes down, black ice could cover many roadways, posing a real danger for drivers. Cook says a lot of the ice and slush that covered the roads earlier on Thursday has melted, making driving a bit easier in some places early Thursday.  But that would all change if what has melted refreezes.  In fact, Cook says that would leave many roads completely covered in ice, with no traction for vehicles trying to travel. Because of the threat, Cook advises that anyone who plans to be driving home from work this evening leave earlier, if that’s possible.  When the sun sets and temperatures start to fall, the threat of black ice will rise. Cook says anyone who can travel earlier, by 5:30 or 6 p.m. at the latest, would be doing a great service to other drivers on the roads.
