Total Lunar Eclipse Tonight!

Tonight, December 20-December 21, will be an amazing viewing opportunity that the world has not enjoyed in 34 months: a total lunar eclipse. For those of us who live here, in Georgia, you’ll have to be somewhat of a night owl to enjoy this one. According to space.com, the eclipse will begin around 1:15 am on December 21. Unfortunately for us working folk, that’s a little past our bedtime. However, out in California, the eclipse will begin around 10:15. According to an article found on Yahoo! , “The most noticeable part of this eclipse will come when the moon begins to enter the Earth’s dark inner shadow (called the umbra).  A small scallop of darkness will begin to appear on the moon’s left edge at [1:33 a.m. EST] The moon is expected to take 3 hours and 28 minutes to pass completely through the umbra.” But, if that’s too late for you, don’t worry. There will be two more opportunities to see a total lunar eclipse in 2011; the first on June 15 and then again on December 10. So if you’d rather wait for warmer weather, June 15 might be a better option. But, if your ready for an adventure tonight–grab your sleeping bags and bundle up outside with the family for a rare and beautiful treat!
